Greater Houston Senior Football Showcase to Feature More Than 400 Student-Athletes Saturday
HOUSTON – Hundreds of senior football players from Houston-area high schools will participate in the fourth annual Greater Houston Senior Football Showcase this Saturday, February 18 on the outdoor fields at the Methodist Training Center. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. CST.
The Showcase is organized by the Touchdown Club of Houston in conjunction with the Houston Independent School District and the Houston Texans. More than 75 local area high school coaches will assist with the event, and several NFL Alumni members will be on hand to help out.
In its three-year history, the Showcase had generated more than $30 million in scholarships for more than 600 student-athletes. During the 2011 season, there were over 80 student-athletes listed on college rosters who attended the event in February.
The Showcase provides an opportunity for local area high school seniors who did not sign Division I scholarship letters to showcase their skills and academic prowess to Division II, III and NAIA colleges to receive scholarship offers to continue their education. The event is free of charge to the student-athletes and to the universities. The showcase is first and foremost an educational initiative. All student-athletes wishing to participate must meet and provide documentation of set SAT/ACT educational requirements and transcripts with certain GPA requirements.
From 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. participants will break into groups with lineman and skills positions testing in the 40 yd dash, bench press and running drills. From 12:30 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. student-athletes can meet with the universities. Registration is now closed, and there are currently over 400 student-athletes that pre-registered and meet academic requirements to attend. Media are encouraged to attend from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
More than 400 student-athletes representing over 120 area high schools have already registered. Coaches from 35 universities are expected to be in attendance, coming from all over Texas and from as far as Minnesota, Ohio and Connecticut. In February 2011, there were 100 high schools, 27 colleges, and 350 seniors that participated in the event, which generated over $15 million in academic scholarship offers.
