57 Play It Smart Participants Sign Division I-A Letters of Intent

Parker Cantey signs with Syracuse University as his parents look on.
MORRISTOWN, N.J., Feb. 3, 2006 – "Play It Smart laid out for me exactly
what I had to do academically to qualify for this scholarship. Without Play
It Smart’s guidance, I never would have been in a position to accept this
opportunity. For real, Play It Smart changed the course of my life," said
Parker Cantey, who played at South Shore High School in Brooklyn, NY and who
on Feb. 1 signed to play outside linebacker for the Syracuse Orange.

Cantey, one of 11 siblings and the first to attend college from his family,
represents the more than 11,000 participants from underserved areas
nationwide that currently benefit from the National Football Foundation’s
Play It Smart program. Cantey is also one of 57 Play It Smart seniors (see
list below) who signed during National Letter of Intent Day on Feb. 1 and
will follow in the footsteps of 97 graduates (see attached list) who played
at the NCAA Division I-A level during the 2005 college football season,
including USC’s Dwayne Jarrett, Ohio State’s Ted Ginn, Jr., and Miami’s Leon
Williams.

“Play It Smart helped me and my team out tremendously. We did activities
together that brought us closer, and we learned how to help one another with
studying,” said Jarrett, who participated from 2000 to 2004 at New Brunswick
HS in New Jersey. “Play It Smart is a great program, and I think all high
schools should have it.”

Launched in 1998 and currently in 136 high schools (listed at
www.playitsmart.org) in 35 states, Play It Smart trains “academic” coaches
to work with high school football teams during the entire school year,
taking the transferable life skills learned on the field and applying them
in the classroom and the community. With major financial support from the
NFL and the NFL Players Association and many other sources, the program has
achieved great results, including:

* 98% of participants graduating high school, compared to a national rate of
86%;
* 80% of seniors enrolling in college compared to 64% of their peers;
* Participants completing more than 25,000 hours of community service
annually; &
* Rosters increasing by 35% for teams with fewer than 40 players.

Ted Ginn, Sr., the father of Ted, Jr., holds the head-coaching job at
Glenville High School in Cleveland, Ohio and his players have benefited from
the program since the 2002-03 school year.

“Play It Smart is a lifesaver. I could not make it without [my academic
coach] Elbert Cobbs who goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure
the players are ready and prepared for the next level,” said Coach Ginn, who
signed 13 players to Division I-A schools on Wednesday, the most of all the
Play It Smart schools. “I can make the college contacts and the players can
show their skills, but Cobbs is the glue that holds our program together.”

At the Division I-A level, twenty-six Play It Smart schools had
participants sign letters of intent. After Glennville, Long Beach Poly High
School (Long Beach, Calif.) had five players sign while Robinson High School
(Tampa, Fla.) and Booker T. Washington High School (Miami, Fla.) had four
sign. Two schools had three players sign and four schools had two. Caesar
Chavez High School in Laveen, Ariz. produced its first letter of intent in
school history.

“The realization of a dream, National Letter of Intent Day, is a special
day for every college football player. It dictates not only the next four
years of his life but the next forty,” said NFF President Steven J.
Hatchell. “We are extremely proud of the passion and countless hours that
our academic coaches devote throughout the year to prepare all of their
players for life after high school.”

Building on the positive peer pressure of the team, Play It Smart academic
coaches are trained at the NFF Center for Youth Development through Sport at
Springfield College (Mass.) in a set of guiding principles and to use a
variety of tactics to make academic achievement the norm for a team. Tactics
might include one-on-one goal setting meetings, life skills sessions, study
halls, SAT/ACT prep classes, leadership conferences, and community service
projects.

“By making it to the next level, this group symbolizes the hard work of
their head coaches, academic coaches, teachers, teammates and many more,”
said Play It Smart National Director Charles Gomes. “We hold them out as an
example of Play It Smart’s power to use a player’s interest in football to
enhance their personal and academic development.”

Additional quotes from participants who signed in 2006 include:

"If it were not for the Play it Smart program, [Head] Coach Ferguson, and
the academic assistance and accountability that Play it Smart has provided
for me, I truly don't believe I would have been able to be academically
eligible for Division I football," said Jerry Brown, who signed with
Illinois and participated at Vashon High School in St. Louis, Mo.

"Play It Smart has helped me realize that I can use more than my athletic
ability to succeed in life. A great education is more important than a
great forty time," said Troy Pascley, who signed with Louisville and
participated at Alliance High School in Alliance, Ohio.

“Play It Smart has taught me that maintaining focus and realizing academics
and athletics go hand-in-hand are the key to success,” said Chavez Grant,
who signed with Miami (Fla.) and participated at Booker T. Washington in
Miami.

“Play It Smart helped me prepare for college. Last year my Academic Coach
worked with me in getting ready to take the SAT and this year we worked
together gathering information for my personal statement,” said Terence
Brown, who signed with New Mexico and participated at Cesar Chavez High
School in Laveen, Ariz.

"The Play It Smart Program really helps you out because it's always there,
not just during football season," said Ailao Eliapo, who signed at San Jose
State and participated at South San Francisco High School in California.
