Inaugural Campbell Trophy Winner Appears on CNN

Chris Howard, the inaugural recipient of the Campbell Trophy in 1990, recently appeared on CNN Newsroom, talking with Ali Velshi about his new book Money Makers: Inside the New World of Finance and Business, his new job as president of Hampden-Sydney College (Va.) and his multitude of life experiences.

Howard, a two-year starter at running back at the Air Force Academy, was a two time Academic All-American, achieving a 3.7 GPA en route to becoming the first recipient of the Campbell Trophy. Established in 1990 and formerly known as the Draddy Trophy until 2009, the award annually honors one member of the NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class as the absolute best in the country for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary community leadership.

Howard’s “partial” list of accomplishments includes a Rhodes Scholarship, earning his wings as a helicopter pilot, serving in Afghanistan as an intelligence officer where he earned a Bronze Star, a Harvard MBA, manager of a $100 million Bristol-Myers Squibb HIV/AIDS initiative in southern Africa, founder of a non-profit foundation, and a member of the General Electric’s Corporate Initiative Group.
