For the first time ever, the Super Bowl will feature two starting quarterbacks who have each claimed an NFF National Scholar-Athlete Award, the Indianapolis Colts’ Peyton Manning at Tennessee in 1997 and the New Orleans Saints’ Drew Brees at Purdue in 2000. A total of six NFF National Scholar-Athletes have earned spots on the teams headed to Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla., for the 6:25 p.m. EST kickoff on Feb. 7. The Saints roster includes NFF National Scholar-Athletes Jonathan Vilma (Miami, 2003), Jon Stinchcomb (Georgia, 2002), and Chase Daniel (Missouri, 2008) while Jacob Tamme (Kentucky, 2007) will suit up for the Colts. Peyton Manning is also one of only two individuals to claim the NFF’s Campbell Trophy, college football’s premier scholar-athlete award, and to appear in a Super Bowl. Matt Sinchcomb (Georgia, 1998) played for the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Matt is the brother of Jon, who is playing in this year’s game for the Saints. 2009 William V. Campbell Trophy winner Tim Tebow headlines the 2010 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama. College Football Hall of Famers Troy Aikman (UCLA), Tim Brown (Notre Dame), Tony Dorsett (Pittsburgh), Joe Greene (North Texas), Billy Sims (Oklahoma) and Roger Staubach (Navy) promoted the 2011 Super Bowl at Cowboys Stadium during an appearance at Brown’s high school alma mater Woodrow Wilson in Dallas. The former college stars were part of the Super Bowl committee’s unveiling of the 250 greatest football moments in North Texas. The list will be trimmed down by fans to make “The 100 Greatest Moments in the History of North Texas Football”. Former broadcaster and NFF Gold Medal winner Keith Jackson was named the recipient of the Davey O’Brien Foundation’s 2009 Charles Ringler Founder’s Award. The NFF Chicago Metro Chapter will feature College Football Hall of Famer and former Chicago Bear Steve McMichael (Texas) along with teammate Richard Dent. The dinner is scheduled for February 22. The NFF Capital District Chapter in Albany, New York, was the major benefactor of the Clinic of Champions, hosted at RPI (New York) East Campus Athletic Village, on January 18. Former Syracuse star Dan Conley delivered the keynote address. Syracuse senior offensive lineman Jim McKenzie will receive the 2010 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award at the 10th Annual NFF Central New York Chapter Awards Banquet. NFF board member Gene Corrigan will be the keynote speaker at the banquet on January 31. Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen will speak at the NFF Miss/Lou Chapter banquet on February 25. The NFF Central Indiana Chapter banquet will be February 27 at the Indianapolis Colts Complex. Colts linebacker Gary Brackett (Rutgers) will receive the chapter’s Courage Award and 14 area high school football players will be recognized as scholar-athletes. Boise State head coach Chris Petersen was the keynote speaker at the NFF Portland Chapter’s 50th Anniversary banquet on December 9, 2009. The chapter honored 16 students with its scholar-athlete awards. Ithaca College (New York) defensive tackle Kyle Scharles has been named the NFF Southern Tier Chapter (New York) Scholar-Athlete award winner. He will be recognized at the chapter banquet on January 31. The NFF Clark County (Wa.) Chapter honored Taylor Nelson and Stuart Jergensen with its top Scholar-Athlete scholarships at its annual awards dinner on January 20 in Vancouver, Washington. Penn State Associate Athletics Director for Football Operations Fran Ganter was the keynote speaker. Wisconsin extended head coach Bret Bielema through 2015… Skip Holtz accepted the head coaching job at South Florida… Sonny Dykes has been named the new head coach at Louisiana Tech… Ruffin McNeill has been named the new head coach at East Carolina. Lincoln Riley and Brian Mitchell will serve as offensive and defensive coordinator, respectively for the Pirates…Brian Stewart will be the new defensive coordinator at Houston… Matt Wallerstedt, defensive coordinator at Air Force, added assistant head coach to his title… Jeff Horton accepted the offensive coordinator position at Minnesota… Tim Landis will serve as special teams coordinator at San Jose State… Travis Bush accepted the offensive coordinator position at UT-San Antonio… David Beatty has been hired as offensive coordinator at Rice… Texas A&M hired Tim DeRuyter as defensive coordinator… Joe Tumpkin accepted the defensive coordinator job at Central Michigan… NFF National Scholar-Athlete Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) joined Oklahoma State’s staff as a quality-control coach… Buffalo hired Mike Dietzel as co-special teams coordinator. UT-San Antonio graduate Jim Bodenstedt made the largest private donation in UT-San Antonio football’s short history. UTSA will rename the student athletics learning center after Jim and his wife Cathy… Buffalo will name its newly renovated athletic training facility after long-time trainer Michael F. Rielly… Former Army football player Lt. Col. Greg Gadson was presented the 2010 Award of Inspiration by the NCAA Honors Committee… Arlington Lamar (Texas) athlete Aaron Chang was named the recipient of the 2009 Davey O’Brien High School Scholarship Award… The Texas Sports Hall of Fame is opening a Southwest Conference gallery on February 6 which will include a large Cotton Bowl exhibit and areas for each of the nine former SWC schools. The Texas Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet will take place on February 6 and will include former Houston Oilers owner Bud Adams, former Baylor receiver and College Football Hall of Famer Lawrence Elkins, former Dallas Cowboy Chuck Howley (West Virginia), former Rice quarterback Tommy Kramer, former Dallas Cowboy Harvey Martin (Texas A&M-Commerce) (deceased) and former Dallas Cowboys running back and assistant coach Dan Reeves (South Carolina)… College Football Hall of Famer Bill Willis (Ohio State) was among the 2010 “Great Ohioans” honored at the Ohio Statehouse. On Labor Day Weekend defending Texas High School 5A-Champion Euless Trinity will play Arkansas 4A State champion Shiloh Christian in the headline game of the 2010 Kirk Herbstreit Classic at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. DeSoto (Texas), Denton-Guyer (Texas) and Cedar Hill (Texas) are also scheduled to participate… Penn State has frozen the 2010 prices for season-ticket holders. Tulane LB Sule Osagiede died last week in Beaumont, Texas. He had missed the 2009 season with a broken neck.
