Posted: Jan 26, 2010
Syracuse University senior Jim McKenzie (Springfield, Pa.) will receive the 2010 Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award at the 10th Annual Central New York Chapter of the National Football Foundation (CNY NFF) Scholar-Athletes Awards Banquet at the Turning Stone Resort on January 31 at 4:00 p.m.

In its 11th year, the CNY NFF was formed to support the local high schools and colleges in their mission of developing leadership through the life-related lessons football teaches, including teamwork and academic excellence.

A three-year starter, McKenzie is a 2009 ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America selection, a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team selection and earned Athletic Director's Honor Roll honor and Dean's List recognition in every semester at Syracuse. The biochemistry major started 31 games, including a string of 26 in a row until he was injured in the fifth game of the 2009 season. He returned to start the final four games on the schedule after missing three contests. McKenzie anchored the offensive line that blocked for 1,000-yard rusher Delone Carter in 2009 and 1,000-yard rusher Curtis Brinkley in 2008. In 2007, he was named to the Rivals.com BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

During the summer of 2009 completed an internship at Upstate Hospital, participating in a study that analyzed the duration of a patient stay based on a number of factors once they were admitted from the emergency room. McKenzie is a regular participant in the ‘Cuse Cares Community Program, working with children, at risk youth and the elderly.

Since its inception, the CNY Chapter has recognized 554 Scholar Athletes and awarded $120,000 in scholarships. In addition to the annual awards and scholarships, the CNY Chapter conducts numerous programs throughout the year to promote positive development of area youth.

The National Football Foundation was formed in 1948 by General Douglass MacArthur, Grantland Rice, and Red Blaik. The formation of a local Chapter to support nearly 70 high schools and colleges in the CNY region was spearheaded by founding members that included former Syracuse coaches Paul Pasqualoni and Dick MacPherson.
