After merging with the University of Oklahoma’s Touchdown Club in early 2005, the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Football Foundation has generated a great deal of excitement throughout the Sooner State. With Chapter President Max Weitzenhoffer at the helm, the chapter will be able to take of advantage of their newfound resources and create great opportunities for amateur football in the state of Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Chapter continues to increase in membership. With about 200 members, they see their union with the Touchdown Club as a catalyst to attract more individuals to the organization. Their exciting new collaboration will open doors to more events hosted by the chapter. Currently, the Oklahoma Chapter hosts an annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet, honoring student-athletes for their academic and football successes. The event attracts over 350 individuals. At their dinner, the chapter awards 11 outstanding high school football players with $1,500 scholarships each. They also award outstanding coaches from the state with the Tony Calvert Coach Award and $1,000 scholarships, totaling around $19,500 in scholarship monies each year.

Local football players and legends have supported the Oklahoma Chapter. The 2004 Heisman-winner Jason White, College Football Hall of Famer Barry Switzer, and Oklahoma Sooner Running Back Renaldo Works II are all involved with the chapter. Recent honorees include Oklahoma Sooner’s Coach Bob Stoops, who was honored with the chapter’s Merv Johnson Integrity in Coaching Award.

In addition to its annual scholarships and awards, the chapter supports two schools in the National Football Foundation’s Play It Smart program— Anadarko HS and Stillwell HS. The program targets high school football teams in underserved environments for extra support with their academic and personal development. The chapter is also exploring the possibility of hosting its first NFL/NFF Coaching Academy, which is designed to further educate youth and high school coaches in not only the areas of football skills and strategy but also in the game’s character building and social benefits
