San Bernardino County, the largest county in the United States by area and larger in mass than 9 states, boasts three junior colleges, one university, and over fifty high school football programs— including Eisenhower High School, the starting point for College Football Hall of Famer Ronnie Lott. Founded in 2004, the 45 members of the San Bernardino County chapter and Chapter President Jeffrey Johnston take advantage of the strong football ties in the community to fulfill their mission of promoting amateur football.
“The chapter offers a wonderful opportunity to help open doors to people who have a passion for what the game of football can do for people of all ages,” said Johnston. Since its inception in October 2004, the San Bernardino County chapter has shown steadfast dedication to their local schools. They hold an annual Scholar-Athlete Banquet, honoring athletes who flourish both on the field and in the classroom. The chapter’s agenda includes more events, and they have begun exploring a Play It Smart program in their area, an annual golf tournament, and a coaching clinic. The concept of a speaker luncheon series, where celebrities would share their experiences with kids and parents four or five times a year, has also generated a lot of excitement. Additionally, the chapter rewards many athletes, coaches, and others in their area with awards, including the NFF Chapter Service Award, Excellence in Football Media Award, Golden Whistle Award for officials, and Team of the Year. The San Bernardino Chapter distributes $5,500 in scholarship money each year. “The chapter teaches you about teamwork,” Johnston said. “It teaches you about individual responsibilities, and it encompasses a lot of the life skills you need to be successful in whatever arena you to choose to pursue.” For more information, please visit www.nffsbc.com. |
