The hard work and endless efforts made by the 150 members of The National Football Foundation’s Suffolk County Chapter has yielded one of the more successful and established chapters in operation. With Chapter President Leonard at the helm, the chapter has upheld the goals of the Foundation by promoting excellence in amateur football through their various events.

Every year in December, the Suffolk County Chapter holds their Scholar-Athlete Banquet honoring student-athletes who have performed exceptionally well both in the classroom and on the football field. In honoring these kids, the chapter distributes $7,000 each year in scholarship monies for the scholar-athletes. The Suffolk County Chapter also presents a variety of awards – a Top Scholar-Athlete Award, a Golden Eleven Award, a Contribution to Amateur Athletics Award, and an Official of the Year Award.

Out of the 106 high schools located in Suffolk and Nassau Counties, there are four classifications, based on school enrollment, that divide these schools into competing All-Star teams. The National Football Foundation Chapters in Suffolk and Nassau Counties sponsor two games— large school vs. large School (Nassau vs. Suffolk) and small school vs. small School (Nassau vs. Suffolk). One game is held the night before Thanksgiving at Hofstra University and the other is held on Thanksgiving morning at Stony Brook University. Both games are televised on local cable television.

The Suffolk County Chapter also holds an annual golf outing for all of its members in April. Geared for non-scholarship players, the chapter holds a college placement symposium for local high school seniors, who will have the opportunity to be evaluated and try to find the right college choice. Another big event hosted by this chapter is their two-day NFF/NFL Coaching Academy clinics. On the second day, there is a free youth clinic for players, ages six to thirteen, along with a parent’s symposium. Outback Steakhouse cooks for all participants, which historically has been over 1,000 people— 500 players, 400 coaches and 100 parents. Finally, the Suffolk County will open an NFF Long Island Hall of Fame, honoring those who have played or mentored in the community.
