Member Biography
A nagging ankle injury during the 1894 season prevented
Charles Brewer from being perhaps a four-time All-American.
Weighing only 150 pounds, Brewer first became an All-
American during his freshman season in 1892. In his All-
America selections of that year, Caspar Whitney described
Brewer in the following terms: "He can stand as much banging
about as any back. His gains were made by quickness in
starting for the hole and determination once he reached it. He
is cat-like in his movement and very speedy." During his four
varsity seasons Harvard won 41 games, lost six and tied one.
These were the days when Harvard and Yale dominated the
game. Brewer was part of a Harvard team that outscored its
opposition 1296 to 138 over four years, "an 24.1 average
point per game differential. Brewer specialized in making long
runs, such as his 95-yard run against Brown in 1893 which
was described by the Boston Globe as, "the prettiest run of the
year."
