Member Biography

Anthony Carter was a 3-time All-America choice. He was unanimous All-America in 1981 and 1982. In 3 years of voting for the Heisman Trophy, he placed 10th, 7th, 4th. In 1980, teammates voted him the Most Valuable Player Award, the first time a sophomore had been named by Michigan squad members. In 1982, he was named MVP of the Big 10 Conference. In his career he had 36 touchdowns, 33 on pass receptions. He scored 240 points. This was a Michigan record, breaking the mark of 237 by Tom Harmon in 1938-40. It has since been topped. Michigan had a 35-13 record in his four years, won two Big 10 Championships, was in four bowls, and won the Rose Bowl once and the Bluebonnet Bowl once. Carter won four letters and was captain in 1982. He also returned kicks. He returned 66 kickoffs, averaging 25.5 yards, and 70 punts, averaging 12 yards. Carter had a pro career 1983-95 with the Michigan Panthers of the US Football League and with Minnesota and Detroit in the National Football League.
