Member Biography
Hugh Green played defensive end for Pittsburgh and in 1980
wrapped up the Lombardi/Rotary Award, given to the best
college lineman of the year. Then came other awards which
no defensive end had previously won: the Maxwell Award as the
nation's best player; Walter Camp Foundation's Player of the
Year; Sporting News Player of the Year. Green finished second
in the voting for the Heisman, and that is the highest rank a
defensive specialist has ever attained. Green was an
All-America choice three times, making it unanimously in 1979
and 1980. Even before he won all those honors in 1980, he
picked up a big one in 1979. Street & Smith Magazine named him
to its all-decade team, covering 1970-1979. Green followed
his college career with a pro football term: 1981-1991 with
Tampa Bay and Miami. Green was born July 27, 1959, in Natchez,
Mississippi. When his football days ended, he returned to
Natchez and operated a farm. Pittsburgh retired his jersey,
No. 99.
