Neil Lomax, in his career at Portland State 1977-1980, had the greatest records of any passer up to his time. He threw for 106 touchdowns and 13,220 yards. By the years, his touchdown passes were 18 in 1977, 25 in 1978, 26 in 1979, and 37 in 1980. Portland State played in Division 1-AA, but Lomax had statistics that topped all divisions. He led the nation in total offense three times, 1978-1980. He led the nation in passing in 1978 and missed the next two years when the rating system changed from total completions to passing efficiency. In a 1980 game against Delaware State, Lomax threw seven touchdown passes in the first quarter. This was on the way to a 105-0 victory. The 1980 Portland State team won the national scoring championship with 541 points in 11 games. Lomax also had fabulous figures for pass completions --102 in 1977, 241 in 1978, 299 in 1979, 296 in 1980. His passing yardage in 1980 was 4,094 in 11 games. That year Lomax finished seventh in the Heisman voting and was most valuable player in the Senior Bowl. He stood 6-3 in height and weighed 215. The St. Louis Cardinals drafted him, and he played nine years in the pros. After his playing days ended, he became president of Pro-Max, a sports promotion firm.
