Member Biography

In one season Wilbert Montgomery scored 31 touchdowns, rushed for 1,181 yards, was named All-America (college division) by the Associated Press and the NAIA, and helped Abilene Christian win the NAIA Division I national championship. This was his freshman season. In subsequent years, his rushing yardage for each season was 657, 612, 597. He missed many games because of injuries. His 31 touchdowns in 1973 is a record for a freshman and is for the regular season only. Of 70 career touchdowns, 60 were by rushing, 9 by receiving, and one on a 99-yard punt return. These figures are for regular season games. Montgomery also had 6 touchdowns in postseason play. He was a high school star in Greenville, Mississippi. At Abilene Christian, he won four letters in football and three in track. He ran the 100-yard dash in 9.6 seconds. He stood 5-10 in height and weighed 195. He had a nine-year pro career with Philadelphia and Detroit. On March 21, 1981, Abilene Christian honored him with the Wilbert Montgomery Appreciation Dinner. His school gave him the Alumni Citation Award. Everyone remembered his first game for Abilene Christian. It was against Arkansas State in 1973. The first time Montgomery touched the ball, he ran for a touchdown.
