Against Notre Dame in 1976 he caught seven passes, scored two touchdowns and a two-point conversion, and graded 90 on blocking. Alabama's record each year with Newsome was 11-1, 11-1, 9-3, 11-1 with three Southeastern Conference championships. The Atlanta Touchdown Club and the Birmingham Quarterback Club named Newsome Lineman of the Year in the conference in 1977. His coach, Bear Bryant, called him "the greatest end in Alabama history and that includes Don Hutson. A total team player, fine blocker, outstanding leader, great receiver with concentration, speed, hands." After college Newsome played for the Cleveland Browns at tight end 1978-90.
