Member Biography
Tom Scott was an end who could inspire fear in the hearts of
men - especially ball carriers and passers. In 1952, during a
big game against Vanderbilt, Scott threw ball carriers and
passers for 8,10,12 and 15 yard losses. Scott drilled
quarterback Billy Krietemeyer from Vanderbilt several times,
allowing him to toss the ball only 11 times. Nine passes were
incomplete and two were intercepted, one returned for a
Virginia touchdown. The 6-2, 210-pound Scott was the main
force behind Virginia's 27-0 victory. Tom's abilities were not
limited solely to defense; he caught his share of touchdown
passes and made running plays work with relentless blocking.
In his sophomore year, he helped his team lead the nation in
pass defense, allowing a mere 50.3 yards per game. Scott
supplemented his great collegiate career with an outstanding
record as a lacrosse player. He went on to receive All-
America honors in both areas. Tom played in the East-West
Shrine game and with the College All-Stars. The University of
Virginia voted him best All-Around Athlete in the school's
history. Tom Scott went on to play 12 years in the pros with
Philadelphia and the New York Giants. He was captain of the
Giants team.
