Member Biography
Chet Gladchuk was one of five Hall of Fame players to play
for Boston College in 1940. The 6-4, 242-pound center came
to Boston College as a four-sport star from Warren Harding
High School in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Gladchuk continued
as a multi-sport star at Boston College as he also played
center for BC's basketball team. As a sophomore he played
for Hall of Fame coach Gil Dobie on a 6-1-2 team. The
following season, Gladchuk became associated with yet
another Hall of Famer as Frank Leahy became the head
coach. Boston College posted a 9-1 regular season mark and
played Clemson in the Cotton Bowl. Despite losing 6-3,
Gladchuk was part of a Boston College defense that forced
Clemson to punt 11 times, a Cotton Bowl record. The 11-0,
1940 squad was unquestionably Boston College's all-time best
team. Boston College finished with a 19-13 Sugar Bowl
victory over Tennessee. That year, the Associated Press
selected Chet as a first-team All-America. Gladchuk played
for the New York Giants in 1941 and 1946-47. He was an
officer in the Navy from January, 1942, to May, 1946. He
was head coach of Bridgeport University in 1948 and the
Montreal Alouettes in 1949. Gladchuk was assistant director
of athletics at the University of Massachusetts, beginning in
1952. He died in 1967.
