Allen R. "Buck" Flowers played two years at Davidson 1916-
17, and three at Georgia Tech 1918-20. In 1917 he made a
68-yard run for Davidson against Navy. In 1920, playing for
Georgia Tech against Auburn, he scored on punt returns of 82
and 65 yards and on a run from scrimmage of 33 yards. He
also threw a touchdown pass of 25 yards. That year he also
made an 82-yard punt against Georgetown and an 85-yard
punt return against Davidson. For the season he rushed 80
times for 819 yards, returned 26 punts for 429 yards,
completed 9 passes for 255 yards, drop-kicked 2 extra
points, and averaged 47 yards on punts. Coach Bill Alexander
called him pound for pound, my greatest player. In 1920 he
was listed at 5-8 in height and 152 pounds in weight. But I
weighed only 117 my first year of college ball, Flowers said.
The Atlanta Journal said he was flitting like a phantom, an
undulating, rippling, chromatic phantom, over the whitewashed
lines. The Nashville Banner: ...like a frightened ghost,
weaving, twisting, floating just out of reach. Sports writer
Morgan Blake wrote, The Auburn Tiger came up with claws
sharpened. As he writhed in death agony when the battle was
over, he made one request, Please omit Flowers.'" Flowers
was born March 26, 1899, in Sumter South Carolina. He
died in 1983 in Birmingham, Alabama.
