Impressive ratings and attendance figures signal the sport’s relevance in every corner of the country.

IRVING, Texas, March 19, 2013- The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) showcased today three impressive facts from the 2012 college football season that emphasize the strong interest in the sport by millions of fans across the country, including:

Exceptional Attendance Figures: The sport produced the third highest attendance figure ever with 48.96 million fans attending a game, including 1.7 million spectators for the bowl games.

Outstanding Television Viewership: More than 216 million viewers tuned in to watch the regular season with another 126 million watching the bowl games.

Powerful Bowl Ratings: The Discover BCS National Championship Game on ESPN between Alabama and Notre Dame produced the second most-viewed program in cable television history with 26.4 million viewers, only behind the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. The five BCS bowl games averaged 15.1 million viewers up 7 percent from last year.

"In every instance, whether it's the regular or the bowl season, the numbers for college football show strong interest," said NFF President & CEO Steve Hatchell. "College football fans have an unmatched passion for their sport, and the options for them to connect with their teams have never been greater. We are grateful to the conferences, bowl games and the media for their creativity and commitment in delivering a first-class product that allows fans to experience the game in every imaginable way."

College football attracted its third-highest attendance total ever with 48,958,547 fans turning out to watch a home, neutral-site or postseason game in 2012 at the 644 NCAA schools, according to the NCAA. The number represents a slight drop (1.49 percent) from the record set last year when 49,699,419 attended a game, and the numbers symbolize a phenomenal increase of 156 percent from the 19,134,159 fans that the NCAA reported when they first started collecting attendance figures in 1948*. During the past sixty years, total attendance has only dropped more than 2 percent on two occasions, including in 2004 when the NCAA capped 12-game seasons and in 1995 when a 2.25 percent decrease occurred.

The 35 bowl games this season attracted 1,722,833 spectators to the stands (49,224 per contest), slightly less than the record mark of 1,813,215, which was set after the 2010 regular season, and a majority of the contests, 18, experienced increases in attendance from last year.

College football bowl game viewership across all networks also remained extremely strong, attracting 126 million viewers to television screens to watch the 35 bowl games and complimenting the more than 216 million people who tuned into the regular season. The ESPN family of outlets alone reached more than 187 million viewers during the telecasts of its regular season games, and ESPN's presentation of the five BCS bowl games averaged 15,131,000 viewers, up 7 percent from last year.

The game has benefited enormously from the commitment of every major media sports outlet, including the Big Ten Network, BYUtv, CBS, CBS Sports Network, ESPN, ESPN on ABC, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN3, ESPN3D, Fox College Sports, Fox Sports, Fox Sports Net, FX, the Longhorn Network, NBC, NBC Sports Network, Pac-12 Network, and multiple regional and local outlets. Throughout the regular and bowl seasons these outlets continue to capitalize on college football's ever-increasing popularity to produce an increasingly dynamic product that engages fans on new levels. IMG reports that the entire industry has committed $25.5 billion in college rights fees over the next 15 years.

Ranked among the top most popular sports in the United States along with the National Football League and Major League Baseball, NCAA Football counts 103 million adults as fans** or 44 percent of all U.S. adults. Among adult college football fans, 61 percent are male and 39 percent female. Twelve percent are between the ages 18-24, 18 percent are 25-34, 19 percent are 35-44, 20 percent are 45-54, 16 percent are 55-64 and 16 percent are age 65 or over. Sixty-one percent have an annual household income of $50,000 or more, with 42 percent at $75,000 or more, and 25 percent at $100,000 or more. Thirty-two percent are college graduates and 61 percent are married, according to Scarborough Sports Marketing.

Regular Season Attendance Highlights

  • 48,958,547 fans attended college football games at all 644 NCAA schools in 2012, marking the third-highest total in history.
  • The Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) drew 37,170,235 spectators or an average of 45,440 fans per game. The Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) pulled in 5,967,272 fans, followed by Division II (3,006,297) and Division III (2,361,687).
  • The SEC, which added Missouri and Texas A&M, became the first conference in history to break the seven million fan barrier with an all-time conference attendance record of 7,478,304 fans attending games in 2012 for an average of 75,538 spectators per game. The total extends the SEC's streak of 15 consecutive seasons with the highest average fan attendance.
  • The top-five conferences for average-home-game attendance included the SEC (75,538), Big Ten (70,040), Big 12 (59,004), Pac-12 (53,679) and ACC (49,910).
  • The Pac-12 Conference set a high water mark for total attendance with 4,240,632 fans attending a game as did the Sun Belt with 1,008,084 spectators attending a game. At the FCS level the Big South, Missouri Valley Football, and Northeast conferences all set new records.
  • Michigan averaged 112,252 fans per home game, eclipsing its own record set in 2011 and marking their 15th consecutive attendance title.
  • Alabama led all teams with 1,299,659 fans watching its 14 regular season games in 2012. Eight other teams played in front of more than one million fans this season: Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio St, Texas and Wisconsin.
  • Michigan (112,252), Ohio State (105,330), Alabama (101,722), and Texas (100,884) all averaged more than 100,000 fans per home game in 2012. The other FBS programs in the top ten for average home attendance included Penn State (96,730), Georgia (92,703), LSU (92,626), Tennessee (89,965), Southern California (87,945) and Florida (87,597).
  • Four FBS teams enjoyed crowd increases of more than 10,000 fans per game in 2012: California (18,219-person increase per game), Southern California (13,139), TCU (12,361) and UCLA (11,838). (Stadium renovations at Cal and TCU played a role in their increases.)
  • Appalachian State claimed its fifth FCS attendance title in six years with an average of 26,358 fans per game, followed by Montana (25,236), James Madison (22,783) and Old Dominion (20,037).
  • Grand Valley State (MI) captured the Division II attendance title by averaging 12,034 fans per game, followed by Miles (AL) with 11,117, Tuskegee (AL) with 10,869, Kentucky State (10,534), West Texas A&M (10,379) and Pittsburg State (KS) with 10,055.
  • St. John's (Minnesota) netted the Division III attendance title with an average of 7,948 fans per game, followed by Wisconsin-Whitewater with 7,552, Hampden-Sydney (VA) with 6,723, Wabash (OH) with 4,873 and Concordia-Morehead (MN) with 4,839.

Regular Season Ratings Highlights

  • More than 216 million viewers tuned in to watch a regular season telecast.
  • College football posted either the No. 1 or No. 2 Saturday primetime-rated show for 14 consecutive weeks this past fall, including seven times at No. 1, according to IMG.
  • ESPN's Saturday Night Football on ABC averaged an impressive 6,518,000 viewers and a 4.0 rating, making it the highest-rated and most-viewed college football series in the same time slot during the 2012 season. For 6 of its 12 broadcasts this season, the show was the most-watched program of the night.
  • CBS Sports' national coverage of the SEC ON CBS for the 2012 season averaged a national household rating/share of 3.9/9, making it the highest-rated regular-season college football package in multiple windows on any network for the fourth consecutive season.
  • Notre Dame football on NBC scored its most-watched season in seven years, averaging 4.4 million viewers and a 2.8 household rating for their seven games on NBC, up 69% and 67%, respectively, from last year.
  • The Alabama-Georgia SEC Championship Game on CBS produced the highest-rated and most-watched college football telecast of the 2012 regular season, producing a 9.8/20 ratings/share and 16.2 million viewers.
  • The ESPN on ABC Saturday Night Football broadcast of Notre Dame and USC produced the outlet's second most-viewed and second highest-rated regular-season game since 1991, averaging 16,059,000 viewers and a 9.4 rating. It was the most viewed primetime college football game in 2012.
  • The November 3 game on CBS between Alabama and LSU produced the second most watched primetime game in 2012 with a 6.8/12 rating/share and 11.4 million viewers, and the November 10 CBS game between Texas A&M and Alabama also notched an impressive 6.1/13 ratings/share with 9.6 million viewers.
  • The ABC Saturday Night Football broadcast on Nov. 17 of Stanford upsetting then-undefeated Oregon 17-14 in overtime averaged 8,347,000 viewers, a 5.1 rating and 5,855,000 households, garnering the night's largest audience among all networks.
  • The four Notre Dame games on ABC in 2012 averaged 8,839,000 viewers, 6,100,000 households, and a 5.3 rating.
  • Notre Dame's Sept. 22 primetime game against Michigan was the most-watched and highest-rated game of the year on NBC with 6.4 million viewers and a 4.0 household rating.
  • Primetime telecasts for FOX's first Regular Season of College Football averaged a 2.1/4 with 3.2 million viewers, representing an 11% increase over last year's comparable 1.9/3 (3.1 million viewers) for entertainment programming, and the key male demos for Men 18-34 were up +50%, Men 18-49 up +36%, and Men 25-54 up +31%.
  • The Army-Navy game drew a 4.1 rating on CBS, the highest rating for the game since 2009 and the 12th highest rated regular season game in 2012.
  • The Heisman Trophy Presentation on ESPN marked the event's second most-viewed and second highest-rated telecast ever, averaging 4,902,000 viewers and a 3.5 rating, only eclipsed by the 2009 announcement.
  • For the season, ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3 covered 306 regular-season Football Bowl Subdivision games, involving teams from all 11 conferences, plus independents Army, BYU, Navy, and Notre Dame. The telecasts on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 combined to reach more than 187,000,000 viewers.
  • ESPN college football digital platforms logged an average minute audience of 163,000 on college football Saturdays.
  • The new ESPN College Football app for Android and iOS devices received 3.4 million downloads this season. On Saturdays, the app averaged 972,000 unique visitors, 1,800,000 visits, and 10,600,000 page views.
  • For the 12th consecutive year, Birmingham was the highest-rated metered market for ESPN's regular-season telecasts, averaging an 8.9 rating, followed by No. 2 Greenville (4.7), Knoxville (4.6), New Orleans (3.7), Jacksonville (3.6), Columbus (3.6), Atlanta (3.5), Oklahoma City (3.4), Nashville (3.3), and Memphis (3.1).
  • Ivy League football received unprecedented national television coverage in 2012 with seven football games on the NBC Sports Network and one on the CBS Sports Network.
  • The NBC and the NBC Sports Network carried a total of 32 college football games in 2012, including seven Notre Dame games, 10 Mountain West Conference games, six Colonial Athletic Association games, seven Ivy League games, plus the Bayou Classic and Atlanta Football Classic.

Post-Season Attendance Highlights

  • The 35 bowl games this season attracted 1,722,833 spectators to the stands (49,224 per contest), slightly less than the record mark of 1,813,215, which was set after the 2010 regular season.
  • The Discover BCS National Championship Game drew 80,120 fans, the largest crowd to ever view an event at Sun Life Stadium, surpassing the 78,468 for Florida-Oklahoma in the 2009 BCS National Championship Game. The largest crowd to watch a non-football event at Sun Life was 78,363 for WWE WrestleMania 28.
  • The Rose Bowl Game presented by VIZIO attracted the largest crowd for a bowl game with 93,359 fans in attendance to watch Stanford play Wisconsin, continuing the longest sellout streak in college football dating back to 1947.
  • The AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic had its second-largest crowd in the game's 77-year history with 87,025 on hand to watch Texas A&M and Oklahoma.
  • The Valero Alamo Bowl between Texas and Oregon State produced a standing-room-only crowd of 65,277, the fourth largest attendance in the game's history and its fifth sellout in the last seven years.
  • The Chick-fil-A Bowl between LSU and Clemson sold out for the 16th consecutive year with 68,027 in attendance.
  • The BBVA Compass Bowl drew a record crowd of 59,135 with Ole Miss selling more than 21,000 tickets for the game against Pitt.
  • The New Era Pinstripe Bowl set a record with 39,098 attending the game between West Virginia and Syracuse.
  • The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl saw its attendance increase 31 percent with 35,442 fans in the stands.
  • Fourteen bowl games had crowds in excess of 50,000.
  • A majority of the bowl games, 18, experienced increases in attendance from last year.
  • The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl set an attendance record with 48,828 fans in the seats for the East Carolina and Louisiana-Lafayette match-up.
  • The Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl, between Navy and Arizona State with attendance of 34,172 produced the 5th highest mark in the history of the game.
  • The Famous Idaho Potato Bowl between Utah State and Toledo attracted 29,243 fans to the stadium, the fourth-best attendance in the game's history.
  • Coupling the 48,127 fans who attended the Russell Athletic Bowl and the 59,712 spectators at the Capital One Bowl, nearly 108,000 people passed through the gates of Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in the span of five days.
  • The Liberty Bowl crowd of 53,687 included more than 25,000 Iowa State vs. Tulsa fans.
  • The FCS National Championship Game in Frisco, Texas, between North Dakota State and Sam Houston State produced a sellout crowd of 21,411, the largest crowd ever for a football game at FC Dallas Stadium.
  • The Division I FCS playoff attracted 227,415 spectators for an average of 11,969 fans at each of its 19 playoff games. The Division II playoff totaled 98,231 fans or an average of 4,271 for each of the 23 games. The Division III playoff drew 56,309 fans for a 1,816 average for 31 games.

Bowl Season Ratings Highlights

  • The Discover BCS National Championship Game between Alabama and Notre Dame on ESPN produced the second most-viewed program in cable television history with 26,380,012 viewers, only behind the Auburn-Oregon match-up in the 2011 BCS Championship on ESPN with 27,316,000 viewers.
  • ESPN's presentation of the five BCS bowl games averaged 15,131,000 viewers, up 7 percent from last year (14,080,000).
  • The Chick-fil-A Bowl between LSU and Clemson became the most-viewed non-BCS bowl on ESPN in history with 8,557,462 viewers, which also represented a 39 percent increase in viewership from the previous season.
  • ESPN averaged 15,131,000 viewers for its five BCS bowl game telecasts, a viewership increase of 7 percent over last season's 14,080,000.
  • The Outback Bowl between South Carolina and Michigan scored ESPN's fourth most-viewed non-BCS bowl in history with an average of 7,582,532 viewers.
  • The Valero Alamo Bowl between Texas and Oregon State averaged an impressive 6,756,916 viewers on a 4.8 rating, making it ESPN's 14th most-viewed non-BCS bowl game telecast in history.
  • The 2013 Rose Bowl Game averaged 17,023,715 viewers based on a 10.9 coverage rating, making it the most-viewed program on cable television outside of the NFL and BCS national championship games on ESPN since last year's Rose Bowl.
  • The Rose Bowl Game and the Discover Orange Bowl combined for an average 13,736,000 viewers, marking an increase of 11 percent from last year for the two-game average on ESPN.
  • The Discover Orange Bowl was the most-viewed program the night of Jan. 1 - broadcast or cable - with an average of 10,562,000 viewers, marking a 47 percent viewer increase from the previous year.
  • The Allstate Sugar Bowl averaged 10,124,796 viewers with a 7.2 rating, a 4 percent viewer increase from last year.
  • The Capital One Bowl on ABC averaged 10,954,000 viewers, marking a 35 percent increase over the network's coverage of last year's Outback Bowl, which occurred in the same time slot in 2012 on New Year's Day. The game earned a 6.6 household rating, up 130 percent from 2011-12, the largest percentage improvement of any bowl game in 2012-13 and seventh-best among all bowls.
  • The AT&T Cotton Bowl on FOX averaged an exceptionally strong 7.2/12 rating with 11.9 million viewers, ranking the game as the highest-rated and most watched Cotton Bowl ever on FOX and a 43 percent increase in viewers from last year.
  • The 10th edition of the Bell Helicopter Armed Forces Bowl between Rice and Air Force drew the largest audience in the game's history with an average of 2,583,848 households (or a 61 percent increase from last year) and the telecast's second highest rating with a 2.6 average household coverage rating, or a 59 percent increase from last year.
  • The New Era Pinstripe Bowl achieved a 60 percent increase in viewers from last year, going from 3,218,730 to 5,147,970.
  • The MAACO Bowl Las Vegas between Boise State and Washington produced a 41 percent increase in viewership from last season with 4,433,640 fans watching on television this year.
  • The BBVA Compass Bowl produced a 33 percent increase in viewers over last year with 2,671,624 fans tuning in to watch the game.
  • The R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl saw a 12 percent increase in viewers from 2,346,886 last year to 2,635,967 this season.
  • The 28 non-BCS bowl telecasts on the ESPN outlets averaged 3,661,000 viewers or an increase of five percent over last season.
  • 28 of the 35 bowl games each attracted more than 2.2 million viewers with the top ten contests each drawing more than 6.7 million fans, and 24 bowl games garnered a 2.1 or better household rating.
  • Birmingham, Ala., averaged an impressive 10.3 metered market rating for the 29 ESPN bowl game telecasts.

Notable Bowl Facts and Milestones

  • The SEC has won seven consecutive BCS National Championships and nine of the 14 BCS National Championships that have been played since its inception in 1998.
  • Alabama became the first back-to-back winner of the BCS National Championship Games; the first school to win three BCS titles; and only the third school to win three titles in four years since the advent of the polls in 1936 (last accomplished by Nebraska from 1994-97).
  • Northern Illinois became the first Mid-American Conference team to play in a BCS bowl with an appearance in the Discover Orange Bowl. Nine conferences and Notre Dame have now appeared in a BCS bowl game.
  • The Allstate Sugar Bowl hosted the 8th Annual NFF National Hall of Fame Salute, featuring the 2012 College Football Hall of Fame Class.
  • Georgia's victory in the Capital One Bowl gave the school 12 wins for the third time in school history.
  • The Louisville victory in the Allstate Sugar Bowl produced a 11-win season for only the fourth time in school in history.
  • The Northwestern victory in the Gator Bowl marked the Wildcats first bowl game win since the 1949 Rose Bowl, giving the school a 10 win season for only the third time in school history. The win ended a nine-game losing streak in bowl games for Northwestern.
  • Vanderbilt's victory in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl gave the school a 9-4 record for Commodores best season since 1915.
  • Rice won only its second bowl game since 1958.
  • The Texas A&M victory in the AT&T Cotton Bowl gave the Aggies 11 wins for only the fourth time in school history. The victory also ended a six game losing streak in the Cotton Bowl for the Aggies with their last win coming in 1988.
  • Tulsa's Liberty Bowl victory over Iowa State marked their first win in a bowl game against a major conference team since 1964 while also giving the school its first 11-win season ever.
  • San Jose State's victory in the Military Bowl gave the school its first 11 win season since 1940 and their first national ranking since 1975.
  • Nevada and Arizona set an NCAA Bowl record, combining for the most plays in a game with 188 snaps during the Gildan New Mexico Bowl.
  • TCU appeared in a bowl game for the eighth straight season and 11th time in Patterson's 12 seasons as head coach.
  • Louisiana-Monroe appeared in their first bowl game ever, playing Ohio in the AdvoCare V100 Independence Bowl.
  • Western Kentucky played in its first bowl game in school history, facing Central Michigan in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.
  • Arizona won their first bowl game since 2008 with a victory in the Glidan New Mexico Bowl.
  • Oregon has participated in four consecutive BCS bowl games.
  • Stanford won its first Rose Bowl Game in 41 years, having last defeated Michigan on Jan. 1, 1972. The victory gave the Cardinal a 12-win season for only the second time in school history. This was their third straight BCS Bowl appearance.
  • Northwestern set a bowl record with four interceptions, defeating Mississippi State 34-20 in the Gator Bowl.
  • Conference USA at 4-1 (.800) posted the best winning percentage in bowl games, and the SEC had the most wins with six during the 2012-13 bowl season.
  • Florida State's win in the Discover Orange Bowl was its first BCS bowl victory since 1999, giving it 12 wins on the season and tying the 1993 and 1999 national championship teams for the most wins in Seminole history.
  • Florida State played in a bowl game this year for the 31st consecutive year, the longest current streak in the nation, which started with the 1982 season.
  • Texas coach Mack Brown and Virginia Tech Coach Frank Beamer have directed their teams to 20 consecutive bowls games since 1993, tying for the longest active streak by a coach.
  • Wisconsin became the first Big Ten team to appear in three straight Rose Bowl games since Michigan accomplished the feat from 1976-78.
  • The Big 12's 90% bowl-participation mark in 2012 is the highest in college football history.
  • West Virginia made a school record 11th consecutive bowl appearance in 2012.
  • SMU played in a school-record fourth consecutive bowl game with an appearance in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl.
  • The Rose Bowl will become the first post season game to host its 100th edition next year while the Rose Bowl Parade stages its 125th anniversary. The following week, the organization will host the BCS National Championship Game in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 6, 2014.
  • Arizona State set or tied 30 individual and team Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl records in a 62-28 victory over Navy. Sun Devils scored on nine consecutive possessions, and their 62 points established a new mark for Pac-10/12 bowl history.
  • The Beef 'O' Brady's Bowl St. Petersburg featured two 9-win teams (Ball State 9-3, vs UCF 9-3) for the first time, breaking 23 bowl game records during the game and hosting its first MAC school ever.
  • The 54th AutoZone Liberty Bowl celebrated St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's 50th Anniversary.
  • The AutoZone Liberty Bowl and Iowa State celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Cyclones last appearance in the bowl, recognizing head coach Johnny Majors and fifteen players from the 1972 Iowa State team.
  • The Outback Bowl has the longest running title sponsorship of any college bowl.
